2022 Scholarship Recipient – Joshua Soberano

Joshua Soberano Awarded $5,000 National Scholarship

Joshua Soberano from Tyrone, GA has been awarded the $5,000 Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS). He is a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Flint River Council. This year nine service scholarships totaling $25,000 were awarded nationwide to recognize scouts for outstanding service and leadership in four areas: Church, Community, School and Scouting.

Soberano truly embodies the idea of servant leadership. When asked why volunteering is important to him, he responded, “Volunteering is one of the best ways to make a positive impact on society and share the love and kindness of the Lord, by forging personal connections with those I am helping and those who I am volunteering alongside.” Soberano has earned three of the religious emblems offered by the NCCS. He has been an altar server for ten years and serves as an usher, musician, Youth Group Leader and religious education teacher.

Passionate about community service, Soberano has volunteered countless hours. Most notable is his Summer of Service initiative that he founded in 2020 through his church to aid the community during Covid. It consisted of three large service projects including making masks for nonprofit organizations, a weekly gardening initiative at his church and a care package drive for the homeless in Atlanta. He has participated in Catholic Heart Workcamp, organizing food and clothing drives, and the Summer Lunch Program, which involves making and delivering lunches for underprivileged students. For the past nine years Soberano has participated in a twice-yearly service project with St. Francis Table to serve the those in need. He also led two disaster relief efforts, one for Hurricane Ida Relief and the other for those affected by the Newnan tornado.

At The Heritage School, Soberano is President of the National Honor Society. He is also President of Tech Club and Latin Club, captain of both the varsity tennis team and Math team. His varied talents include lead STEM tutor, violinist, actor and newspaper writer. Soberano is the Heritage School Class of 2022 Salutatorian and a National Merit Commended Scholar.

In Scouting, Joshua Soberano has served numerous leadership positions, including, but not limited to, Troop Guide, Chaplain, Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader. He attended National Youth Leadership Training, is a member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), BSA’s Honor Society, and served as crew leader for Florida Sea Base, OA Staff and Council Camp Staff.

For his Eagle Scout Project, Soberano constructed a large chicken coop for the church garden which houses five to eight chickens. The garden is an outdoor gathering place for the parish and the eggs are given to parishioners in need of food or served though the church’s food service projects. Over $2600 was raised and 35 volunteers helped to make this project possible. To be eligible to apply for the NCCS Scholarships, the Scout must be Catholic, earned the Ad Altare Dei and/ or Pope Pius XII Awards, and received either the Eagle Scout, Summit or Quartermaster Award.
